I actually had to let it grow on me for a little bit before I could say that I was overall happy with how it turned out. I felt like I did a sloppy job with the whipped cream and I was so tempted to peel it all off and start over again. After deciding that I'm happy with it though I decided to leave it the way it is. Besides, I'm too lazy to deal with all that silicone bathroom caulk again haha. Still gotta attach the tiny donut phone charm to it, but other than that it's pretty much complete!
Honestly, this idea is not original. I was inspired by something VERY similar that I had seen on etsy.com, but it was being sold for $70!!! I had been getting pretty irritated with all the inflated prices I've seen on Etsy. I can understand if the item is super duper amazing and made by a renowned designer, but.. it wasn't. It probably cost me about $20-$25 to make this. If there's always a cheaper alternative, I'm there!
Change of command / dad's retirement ceremony
A few days ago my dad retired from the Coast Guard. A change of command ceremony was held at Sand Island in honor of him and the person who would be relieving him of his position. Everyone is very proud of him for all that he has achieved. My family was even surprised to hear all of the great things he has done during his service. He is such a humble person so not many people know how much of an impact he has really made. It was a wonderful ceremony.
My sister and I were called up to receive a certificate of appreciation as my dad's former CO read it aloud. It reads:
|It is my pleasure to express the grateful appreciation of the United States Coast Guard to you for enduring separations from your father while he served his country. You should know that your father's successful career has been challenging and required unselfish devotion to serve others. Your father was required to do Coast Guard work that prevented him from spending more time with you. He would have preferred to be home to help you when you needed him, but his outstanding work in support of our country was also very important to your future. Your understanding has been essential to his success. The United States Coast Guard thanks you for your support.|
Honestly, I was dreading having to go on stage because I wasn't sure what to expect. And I really wasn't expecting to be so emotionally moved by those words. I know my dad thinks I might have been too young to remember those times that he had to be away from us, but I do remember. And I truly appreciate every word in that certificate. It really means a lot to me.
Right after the ceremony a line queued up to congratulate my dad and lei him. Here he is with my mama Lorna.
I wanted to be the last to lei him and succeeded >:D
The half-ling and myself. I'm pretty sure she finds me just irresistible.
My family at the reception afterward
Paps and his girls. I love how I'm the only one that's ready.
With my certificate :]
